The inconsistent run of form in the inaugural season of ISL may be something to be forgotten for Mumbai City FC as they prepare for the 2015 season. The team that had conceded the most number of goals in the inaugural season has bought in, Manuel Friedrich, the former Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Anelka has agreed a deal to extend his stay at Mumbai FC by another year. Anelka, who had starred for the likes of Arsenal, Real Madrid, and Chelsea in Europe in a successful playing career had been the marquee player for the franchise and his return will boost morale to a great degree as a player-cum-manager this year. The vast experience of Friedrich and Anelka will be a valuable asset as Mumbai City FC build a competitive squad to challenge for top spot in the ISL.
Apart from Anelka, the team retained the services of defender Pavel Cmovs, Brazilian Andre Moritz, Goalkeeper Subrata Pal, midfielder Ralte and Forward Subhash Singh. In the player auction, they bought India’s all-time leading scorer Sunil Chhetri and followed up with the acquisitions of Rowilson Rodrigues, Kingshuk Debnath and Gabriel Fernandes in the domestic draft. The good work was followed up with the signings of Irish Centre Back Darren O’Dea, Spanish midfielders Juan Aguilera Núñez and Cristian Bustos Costa, Haitian footballers Sony Norde and Frantz Bertin, midfielder Selim Benachour from Tunisia, former Lyon and West Ham United striker Frédéric Piquionne.
